This post series is about recent changes in the relationship between the USA and Germany. These changes touch historical strings, attitudes and deep convictions of my generation, at least in the western part of Germany. In the last post, I have tried to point out why members of my generation might regard Mr Hegseth’s and Mr Vance’s characterization of Europe and Germany as “pathetic” with respect to military burden sharing as being close to an offense.
But the growing rift between the US and my generation in Germany, unfortunately, goes deeper – and far beyond questions of burden and risk sharing. To understand this, we need to cast a view on developments from the 80s up to present day’s deep disappointment about the US betraying its previous role as a beacon of democracy. But before doing this, let me slip in an intermezzo.
The view and answers of an AI on ideological motives
Thiel, Musk, Vance are strong protagonists of AI. A lot has already been written on the strange mental constitution of Mr Musk. Politically, it is of much more interest to understand the attitudes of Mr Vance – and his long time sponsor Mr Thiel. So, let us instead look at the perception of an AI regarding the ideological background of Mr Thiel and Mr Vance. And let us later take that into account when discussing the obvious alienation between the US and Germany (excluding far right extremists on our side).
The AI I asked respective question is Aria, a ChatGPT derivative. Of course, one has to take answers of an AI with care and multiple grains of salt. However, an AI casts some light on already publicly discussed aspects of a problem. Not more, not less.
Arias perspective on Mr Thiel’s ideological impact on US politics
Me: How big is the influence of ideologies, maybe even with anti-democratic elements, favored by Peter Thiel on US politics?
Aria:
>>> Peter Thiel’s influence on US politics, particularly through ideologies with anti-democratic elements, is notable and multifaceted. Here are some key points to consider:
- 1. Skepticism Toward Democracy: Thiel has expressed skepticism about traditional democratic processes, advocating for strong, visionary leaders who can bypass bureaucratic inefficiencies. This perspective aligns with a broader trend of populism and authoritarianism in some political circles.
- 2. Support for Libertarianism: Identifying as a “conservative libertarian,” Thiel promotes ideas that prioritize individualism and market-driven solutions over collective democratic governance. This ideology can undermine democratic norms by favoring elite decision-making.
- 3. Investment in Public-Private Partnerships: Thiel’s investments often focus on public-private partnerships, which can blur the lines between government and corporate interests, potentially leading to a concentration of power that challenges democratic accountability.
- 4. Political Alliances: Thiel has cultivated relationships with influential political figures and movements, particularly within the Republican Party and the MAGA movement. His financial support and ideological backing have helped shape policies that reflect his anti-democratic leanings.
- 5. Cultural Impact: Through his ventures and public statements, Thiel has contributed to a cultural shift that questions the efficacy of democratic institutions, promoting a narrative that favors technocratic and authoritarian governance models.
Conclusion: In summary, Peter Thiel’s influence on US politics is significant, particularly through his promotion of ideologies that challenge democratic norms. His skepticism towards democracy, support for libertarian principles, and strategic political alliances contribute to a growing discourse that prioritizes elite governance over democratic participation. Arias perspective on Mr Vance as a follower of Thiel-related ideology
Me: Is it probable that Mr Vance shares ideas of Mr Thiel?
Aria:
>>> Yes, it is quite probable that J.D. Vance shares some ideas with Peter Thiel. Here are a few key points highlighting their relationship and ideological alignment:
- Collaborative Relationship: Vance has had a long-standing relationship with Thiel, who has been a significant benefactor in his political career. Thiel’s support has been crucial in Vance’s rise within the Republican Party.
- Libertarian Influence: Thiel’s libertarian views, which emphasize individualism and skepticism towards traditional democratic processes, resonate with Vance’s political stance. Vance has been described as a national conservative and right-wing populist, which aligns with Thiel’s preference for strong leadership.
- Support for Populism: Both figures have shown support for populist movements, particularly those associated with former President Donald Trump. Vance’s political positions often reflect a populist approach that Thiel has also endorsed.
- Financial Backing: Thiel’s financial contributions to Vance’s campaigns indicate a shared vision for political and economic policies that may prioritize elite governance and market-driven solutions.
In summary, the alignment between Vance and Thiel suggests that Vance likely shares some of Thiel’s ideas, particularly regarding governance and economic policy. If you’d like to explore this further or discuss specific aspects, feel free to ask! <<<
So far, Arias view.
Disturbing …
For me and many citizens in Germany the above answers of an AI are deeply disturbing. Especially, taking into account corresponding contents of the speech of Mr Vance at the MSC in Munich in February and his and Mr Musk’s open support for the far right extremist party AFD.
